Delayed coking units are processing methods that involve the deep thermal cracking of residual oil into gas, light and medium distillate oils, and coke. During the thermal cracking of the residual oil in the coking tower, ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, and hydrogen chloride are generated and enter the top of the fractionation tower and the condensation cooling system. At low temperatures, these react with water to form a corrosive environment of H₂S-HCl-NH₃-H₂O, causing damage to the top of the fractionation tower, internal components, and downstream equipment pipelines and heat ex-changers, even leading to corrosion perforation and leaks.
